INSIGHTS
Practical perspectives drawn from experience
Over more than five decades in executive, Board, advisory and consulting roles, I have seen organisations face many of the same challenges — growth, change, difficult decisions, people issues, governance and performance.
These insights share practical observations drawn from what happens in real organisations and what leaders can learn from it.
STRATEGY & DECISION MAKING
Good strategy is ultimately about making better decisions. It requires understanding what is really happening in a business, separating fact from assumption and considering the consequences of different courses of action. Experience helps leaders recognise patterns, challenge conventional thinking and identify issues that may otherwise be overlooked.
The quality of a decision is often improved by having someone prepared to ask the difficult questions. Independent advice can test assumptions, provide an alternative perspective and help leaders consider risks, opportunities and unintended consequences before committing to a course of action.
Not every decision has an obvious answer. My approach is to help leaders work through the available evidence, understand their options and make informed decisions they can confidently act upon.
BUSINESS PERFORMANCE
Business performance is rarely determined by one measure alone. Revenue, cost, productivity, people, customers and operational effectiveness are interconnected. The challenge for leaders is understanding which measures really matter and what they are telling you about the health and direction of the business.
Good information allows problems to be identified before they become major issues. It also helps distinguish symptoms from underlying causes. Effective analysis means questioning the numbers, looking for trends and understanding what is driving performance rather than simply reporting what has already happened.
Experience provides context to that information. My focus is on helping leaders identify what requires attention, where opportunities exist and what practical actions can improve performance and strengthen the business.
COACHING & MENTORING
Leadership can be isolating. CEOs, executives and business owners are regularly required to make decisions involving people, performance, strategy and risk where there may be no obvious answer and few people with whom they can discuss the issue openly.
Effective coaching and mentoring provides an independent and confidential sounding board. It creates an opportunity to challenge assumptions, explore alternatives and draw on the experience of someone who has dealt with many of the same leadership and business issues.
My approach is practical rather than theoretical. The objective is to help leaders think more clearly, build confidence in their decisions and develop their own capability to deal with increasingly complex situations
